How Important Are My Teeth?

Fair question to ask, no? After all, everyone usually has a different answer to this. Some people are happy with performing the minimum required of oral hygiene and just brushing their teeth normally. Others are a bit different – they insist on brushing, flossing, mouthwashing as often as they can in order for their breath to be minty-fresh and their teeth to epitomize the utopian quality of “pearly white”. People are having an increasingly tough time trying to determine the “standard”, the “convention”, and the appropriations of the ‘average’ of how much and how often to maintain your teeth on a daily basis. This is an especially difficult question just because our world is filled with so many different opinions and views on what is the “right” way of doing things. It would have been so much easier if there was a paradigm to follow. Instead, everything’s really muddled.

People have gotten tired of maintaining their teeth and have forgotten why their teeth are even that important to maintain carefully, both persistently and consistently. Here’s a little reminder as to why those pearly whites are crucial for both you and your body.

First and foremost, you use them to eat. From chewing to slurping to biting to gnawing, your teeth are useful for performing the most basic instinct of humans – eating to survive. Without a proper set of fully-functioning teeth, this task would be completely out of the question.

Along with the basic task of eating, there are other benefits provided by a full set of pearly whites. Take this situation – suppose you just got yourself an awesome job downtown working for one of the big investment banks. You purchased a new set of shoes, did your hair over and over again to get that corporate look that is so desired in our current business world, and wore your new suit. When you get to the office, you spot your manager and you flash them a big smile. Then you notice that they immediately look really dismayed. Why is this? Because of your smile! If you don’t have a proper smile, then creating the important first and lasting impression will be extremely difficult. Think about it – if you go into the corporate world and can’t make good first impressions, then it will be impossible to climb up the corporate ladder and progress to become more and more successful.

If you do have serious dental problems though, it’s not a bad thing at all to visit your dentist. Whether you go to a Toronto dentist or a Vancouver dentist, the result will be the same – your smile will be rejuvenated. My suggestion to those who really do care about their teeth and how it looks to them – visit your local cosmetic dentist and see what services they can offer you. Remember – taking the precautionary but proactive approach is always the best one!

Benefits to Owning a Sauna

In today’s air there are many toxins that individuals want to remove from their bodies, some of which may even be compromising their immune system; saunas can help. A sauna is a good way to sweat out any toxins like heavy metals, alcohol, pollutants, fat and cholesterol. It is also know to help promote healing and the rebuilding of the immune system, help with an individuals mental health, and reduce any visible signs of cellulite.

Steam and infrared saunas provide your body with the means to educe sweating and provide the opportunity for toxins, such as heavy metal toxins, cholesterol and more to leave the body. The sweat from a steam sauna is 95-97% water and only 3-5% toxins. Whereas a infrared sauna would have 5 or 6 times that number; the sweat from a infrared sauna is only 80-85% water and 15-20% toxin emission. This means that an infrared sauna is more efficient at removing toxins from the body, though both types of saunas will remove some toxins from the body.

For years saunas have been known to promote immune systems through the warming of the body. Infrared heat therapy is also efficient in healing injuries, reducing scars, helping the appearance of various skin conditions, and much more.

Many individuals suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder which is a disorder that is widely known to affect the moods of an individual throughout the different seasons. Individuals experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder can experience many symptoms such as depression. Infrared heat therapy imitates the sun, as it produces the same infrared rays; though it does not produce the harmful radiation that the sun does. In doing this infrared saunas are able to imitate the positive effects of the sun without posing any negative consequences, helping individuals with seasonal affective disorder cope with it.

Another condition suffered by many is Cellulite; which appears when the topography of the skin changes. Infrared heat therapy is known to help and it is used by many professionals to reduce any visible signs of cellulite. The reasoning behind this is that infrared rays breakdown toxins and fats in the skin causing the skin texture and ton to change and allowing the skin to appear smoother.

An Infrared sauna provides many health benefits with few risks. They provide a means of detoxification, promote a proper immune system, help aid your mental health, encourage healthier looking skin, and much more.

Dieting 2.0

We've all tried to lose a few pound by starving ourselves. Admit it - everyone's guilty of that crime. The constant song that's sung by doctors and physicians for us to lose weight and the pressure we persistently face from our friends and family drive us INSANE to just shed those pounds ASAP.

The truth? The acronym "ASAP" doesn't really make sense in the normal and effective dieting person's dictionary. Why?

Dieting's a process.

A process is something that you need to integrate with your lifestyle, not a quick conversion done to satisfy the irritating songs sung by your friends and family.

When going on a diet, do some research. It's ludicrous to go from eating high-fat, high-sugar foods to consuming no sugar, no carbs, and no fat for the next two weeks. That kind of "dieting" (if you can even call it that) is dangerous. Why? People who go on crash diets show an irrevocable trend to relapse, eating the same high-sugar, high-carb food that they used to eat. And can you blame them? If I loved to sit on chairs and you took away all of my chairs for the rest of my life so I had to stand up for even the most mundane of tasks, I'd go insane. Or worse, I'd find a chair.

The thing to keep in mind, therefore, is to TAKE IT EASY. Dieting is meant to be a tough process to get used to, but you eventually have to get used to it. It isn't meant to be tedious FOREVER - just for a few days until you get adjusted to your new lifestyle. Lifestyle - that's an important word. When you embark on a diet, it's not a simple addition to your existing routine of doing things - it's a complete change of HOW you do those things.

Going back to the entire concept of losing weight itself - people tend to forget that dieting alone does nothing for a person. You need to, as the cliche goes, find the right balance between exercise and dieting. Think about it - if you eat nothing but vegetables for the next 2 weeks and you don't get up from your couch from the next two weeks, you'll starve, relapse, and eventually go back to exactly where you started. The trick here is to eat SMART foods that enable you to eat foods that you like, but are burnt off with the right amount of exercise. If you can strike a balance between those two components, be prepared for awesome, effective, and efficient results.

Remember - don't call dieting, "dieting" - it's a processed lifestyle change that takes time to get used to and can provide you with results if you don't take it for granted.

A Parent's Guide to Your Children's Tattoos

Like any concerned parent's worst nightmare, my teenage son wanted to get a tattoo for his birthday. I thought he lost his mind and nearly got into a huge argument with him. Why couldn't he be just like all the other kids and ask for a video gaming console instead?

After a heated exchange of words, followed by a cool-down period with lots of contemplation, I slowly saw the error of my ways. All my son wanted was a tiny tattoo for a birthday present. It does not equal to the end of the world just yet.

In Canada, there is no age regulation for getting a tattoo, although most parlours require parental consent for anybody under the age of eighteen. I was thankful that my son respected me enough to ask for permission first. I'd much rather argue with him over getting a tattoo, rather than him going to an untrustworthy tattoo parlour behind my back. If my son wanted to get a tattoo, then it is my responsibility as a parent to fully support him however I can.

My first concern is the quality of the tattoo supplies. I have heard many horror stories about skin infection through unsterilized needles and equipment. To avoid this, I did hours of research online until I came up with a very reputable tattoo parlour with great reviews and references.

Another concern is the design and visibility of the tattoo. My son is still young and a bit naive, so he wanted the tattoo to be placed on a body part with as much exposure as possible. He did not take into consideration that very few employers would appreciate hiring somebody with a bright vibrant tattoo on the side of his neck. I definitely vetoed that suggestion, although I did recommend that he place it on the back of his shoulder - a common place for tattoos.

It took a lot of effort and hard work to give my son the tattoo that he wanted, but I also learned a lot from the tattooing experience. And believe it or not, I believe getting the tattoo was a great bonding experience between parent and child. I would definitely feel prepared now if my daughter wants a tattoo as well...

The UrbanPill Experience

As a single mother, it is important to stay on top of my children's interests and activities. I do not go to as the extremes as some parents who snoop around their offspring's personal lives, but I like to stay informed by having insightful conversations with my kids daily.

One interesting piece of tidbit I learned from my teenage son is this brand new site called UrbanPill. I was alarmed at first when I learned about the title, but the misunderstanding soon clarified itself. UrbanPill is actually an online news site, focusing on the events happening in major Canadian cities Toronto and Vancouver. Members can contribute advice and recommendations about a variety of topics, including music, movies, finance, technology, and even health issues!

It is interesting that I heard about this site from my son. While UrbanPill is geared towards a younger demographics due to its youthful vibe, I was pleasantly surprised at the eloquence and usefulness of the content. In fact, I think the (slightly) older adults can also benefit from the site, as the members in the community also participate in some insightful discussions about serious topics like religion and politics.

The members in this community are obviously great role models for young people. I am happy that my son discovered UrbanPill, and I also intend to follow this site from time to time.

Things to Consider When Entering a Health Spa and Salon

Choosing a health spa shouldn’t be something that is stressful. The point of the spa is for you to relax and get away from life’s everyday pressures. So to help you in this task, here is a quick guide on how you can quickly evaluate a spa to see if it’s the right one for you.

One of the first things you should notice when you enter a spa is its waiting and reception area. The furniture there should be suitable – and that means they should look comfortable, clean, and above all, the stylish. You may ask why this is important; this is a place where you plan to enhance how you look. If they can’t make their own spa look the part, then what makes you sure that they can do the same for you? Obviously, the chairs should be well maintained, not battered and worn out. Over all, there should be a sense of professionalism and relaxation in the area.

Next, you’d want to do a quick check at the equipment; do they look well maintained? One easy way to check this out is to see how the staff treats the equipment. Do they push the perm machine in a rough manner, or do they treat it with the same care they do with their clients? Are the electrical cords simply left out in the way, or do they make sure that it’s out of the way? Simple things like that can truly show the kind of service to expect from the place.

Next, check out the how they organize their products. A well organized product area not only helps you see what products they have and help you choose the appropriate one, but it shows how much effort they put into the details. Last but not least, make sure the style and décor of the place is the kind of place you can relax and enjoy in.

If you’re looking for a place that meets all the criteria I listed above, check out Sashay Day Spa and Hair Salon. In the video below, you’ll see how they organize their spa, and how well they treat their equipment. Hopefully this should give you a good overview of what to look for.
